PREMIERE: wzrdryAV - Forgot About Time [Accidental Meetings]

Today’s premiere comes from Vancouver-based artist wzrdryAV aka Kelly Nairn via the relatively new Brighton imprint, party and podcast series Accidental Meetings. 

The Canadian-based artist’s tape, entitled Midnight Visions, is a tale of two sides—one characterised by beats, the other beatless. ‘Forgot About Time’ falls into the latter of those two categories. It’s filled with abstracted field recordings and synths swathed in static and hiss. Like the rest of Side B, the track has no hard edges. It’s an amorphous, 4-minute sound collage built from layers of stretched out electronics, white noise and the distant hum of machinery with no discernible origin. There are similarities to the murky, nebulous atmospheres of Pinkcourtesyphone, picnic and Low Flung, but ultimately wzrdryAV’s soundscapes, which incorporate lo-fi ambient, Detroit techno and a kind of hazy, formless dub, conjure their own inimitable environment. The full album is set to be released on March 5th. For now, ‘Forgot About Time’ provides a tantalising glimpse into Nairn’s self-contained world.
