Theory Therapy 07: Pretty Girl

Aural therapy for the dance floor deprived, Melbourne’s Pretty Girl crafts a euphoric and atmospheric house mix in the spirit of her spellbinding tracks ‘Message’ and ‘Rely’.

Pretty Girl is Emilia Predebon, one of Melbourne’s up-and-coming electronic producers and DJs. If you’re not yet familiar with their work, you need to check out the artist’s most recent single ‘Message’, an atmospheric, emotionally charged house track that beautifully captures the cathartic experience of the club. Even if you haven’t listened to her mixes for Finding Figaro, Novelcast and Mindset Recordings, ‘Message’ showcases what you can expect from the latest Theory Therapy instalment.

Pretty Girl’s 60-minute mix is club-ready, but in keeping with the Theory Therapy spirit, it’s also dreamy, transportive and easy to get lost in. Like the best club sets, her music is a journey; and seeing as clubbing has been put on immediate and indefinite hold, it’s the trip we need right now. Luxuriate in the restorative sounds of the dance floor. Press play below.

How are you today?

I’m pretty good today, it was my day off work so I had a nice slow morning and then made my way to my decks to record this mix. I also had a felafel foldover from A1 bakery, and two cups of earl grey tea, so that was a great part of my day.

Can you tell us a little bit about the mix? What were you feeling when you made it?

I’ve had a pretty emotional week because of some personal things, so I really wanted to let this mix be a cathartic experience. Because of coronavirus, life has been very monotonous recently, and even though I listen to and make music every day, it’s been difficult to maintain a fresh and passionate mindset towards music. While I recorded the mix, I realised that my interactions with music over the past weeks have been almost forced, since I’ve pushed myself so much to keep moving forward with music while I can’t play shows or experience music with other people. So it was nice to relax and just enjoy some songs that I really like, and I just had a good dance in my room with my headphones on.

Where did you record the mix?

In my room at my parent’s house, which serves as my studio. Today’s weather was very gloomy and rainy, so I switched on my lamp, made the LED light purple, turned my heater up to 30 degrees, and got comfy while I put the mix together.

What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?

Definitely on a rooftop or big hill, watching the sun set.

Are there any tracks you’ve used in the mix that are special or significant to you?

‘TT’ by Kenton Slash Demon, which plays at about 44.30. I’ve listened to this song for nearly 5 years now, and it was an integral part of my music taste development when I moved towards electronic music at about 17 years old. It’s been a soundtrack in my life through lots of different stages, so playing it in a mix now is very satisfying.

What’s on the cards for 2020?

I would honestly love to sleep until 2021 so I don’t have to be awake during this pandemic. Just kidding lol I am staying positive with what’s happening, even though the restrictions have huge implications on myself as a musician and the music industry in general. At the moment I’m making as much music as I can and trying to cram my brain full of learning about analog synthesis and sound design. You should definitely expect to hear some new music from me, as well as seeing PG on quite a few events once the clubs are open again!!
