Theory Therapy 30: Nexcyia

Dubby undercurrents from London.

The Theory Therapy series hits number 30 with a genre-dissolving mix from producer and sound artist Adam Dove, best known as Nexcyia. Adam is currently based between London and Paris, and over the last year or so, his shape-shifting brand of electronic music has been picked up on labels including Cafe OTO, Alien Jams and Cherche Encore.

Adam's mix drifts between ambient, illbient and dubby textures, and features tracks from a bunch of other artists we’re also big fans of, including OL, Igor Dyachenko and Mistareez. It’s marked by many of the same qualities that distinguish his own music: undulating rhythms, operatic synths and disintegrating noise, plus some very well-executed left turns. Adam probably sums this one up best when he says: “This mix is a little different than the other ones.” Dive in below.

How are you today?

Feeling fresh man, I'm on my work break as I write this. drinking tea and looking at people passing by.

Can you tell us a little bit about the mix? What were you feeling when you made it?

This mix is a little different than the other ones – I wanted to include more bumpy stuff in the beginning – sounds that get me up and motivated with a gradual slow ambient piano stuff that weaves my end of day mood haha.

Where did you record the mix?

At home, in beautiful East London :)

Where would you recommend listening to it?

While you're out grocery shopping or doing work research.

Are there any tracks you’ve used in the mix that are special or significant to you?

Anything with Ashtrejinkins man, I'm in love with that guy.

Theory Therapy mixes are about sharing the music that you personally find therapeutic and restorative. What does that mean for you?

Restorative/therapeutic music changes all the time for me – I have days where I need to have some John Coltrane on or days where I need some dubby ambient beats – it varies a lot. I think it just depends in the moment and I see all music as restorative even noise.

Is there a particular album or piece of music that you find yourself returning to for tranquillity?

Andrew Pekler - Sounds From Phantom Islands.

What do you have planned for the rest of the year and the beginning of next?

I have some gigs lined up here in London and one in Bristol. I also have a group exhibition where I'll be showing a sound installation. I'm super excited.
